The process of replacing Chairman Mao’s portrait in Tiananmen Gate lasted for more than an hour.

　　(Reporter Wang Wei) In order to welcome the arrival of the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, last night, the statue of Chairman Mao at Tiananmen Gate ushered in the annual "renewal" work. Under the careful and safe operation of the construction workers, the old portrait that has experienced a year of wind and rain was slowly taken down, and the latest portrait of Chairman Mao was hung on the Tiananmen Gate. Today, tourists from all corners of the country will see a full and bright portrait of Chairman Mao on the Tiananmen Gate.

　　昨夜23点，更换工作正式启动。此次更换，施工人员动用了两辆吊车和一辆货车。和往年的更换工作一样，施工人员登上城楼，先探身下到毛主席画像的悬挂处，缓慢地将旧画像轻轻摘下，再用吊车将画像吊离悬挂的位置，直至旧画像完全被取下。吊车的吊臂再次抬起，稳稳地钩住停放在货车上的新画像的顶端，将画像悬起，并向天安门城楼的中央靠近。整个过程，画像并没有摇摆晃动。三十几分钟后，新绘毛主席画像被悬挂在天安门城楼中央。施工人员还细致地用毛巾将画像的底部画框擦拭干净。今天0点05分，更换工作完成，整个换像过程持续了1个多小时。

　　昨夜的北京微凉，虽然是夜里23点，天安门城楼前仍然有游览的游客。他们见证了画像的更换工作。画像更换完毕后，大家等不及纷纷举起相机、手机和新画像合影留念。

　　据了解，每年国庆节前夕，天安门城楼都要更换新的毛主席画像，被风吹日晒稍许褪色的旧画像被取下。画家将会把旧画像进行处理，在处理后的画板上再精心画出毛主席的新画像，等到了下一年国庆前夕，再把上一年的旧画像更换下来。据了解，毛主席画像高6米、宽4.6米，加上框，总重量达1.5吨，是全亚洲最大的手绘领袖画像。
