Text/Hu Guangxin
Since the end of last year, the voices of Chinese female musicians have become clearer and clearer. UGLY BEAUTY by Jolin Tsai is naturally the best among them. Besides, Ai Yiliang’s Living Vertically, and Bai An’s 1990s, all of them jump out of the shackles of petty love and open up richer expressions about women themselves. The previous female singers still write about women from their own experiences, while BiBi Zhou’s "LUNAR" is much more ambitious — — She broke away from the concept of individual direct play and explored female consciousness with body elements such as ears, figure, wrinkles and shoulder blades.
It is worth mentioning that the lyrics of the whole disc are arranged by Zhou Yaohui. A few years ago, in Juno Mak’s concept album Evil is a point of view, he handed over five lyrics from a female perspective, and expressed the changes of the heroine in the song with themes such as First Opening, Groaning and Rufa. LUNAR may be a continuation of this idea. Compared with his gorgeous and complicated Cantonese lyrics, the wording and sentence-making of the seven Chinese songs in LUNAR are much simpler. However, there is a clever idea in this album. He runs through the whole album with the core image of "the moon". In the western tradition, the moon represents feminine, and it has crazy mysterious power, which is a metaphor for women. Therefore, he described the subconscious in The Rebellious Muse, described the female physiological period by the tide in The Woman Flow, and divided "Fat" into "Half Moon" to discuss the relationship between figure and beauty … … Although this approach is a bit flattering, it is also true in an album with such a strong concept.
This album continues BiBi Zhou’s music preference in recent years, wrapping R&B rhythm with electronic sound effects, which also fits the feminine and emotional music atmosphere of LUNAR. However, in this album, which is complete from concept to presentation, BiBi Zhou’s singing is a bit dramatic. Her timbre was originally low and hard, lacking a little soft color, but when she met the extremely feminine theme of LUNAR, her singing was even more puzzled.
